Happy Birthday Mr. Gygax (A letter to Gary)

:: A thank you letter to Gary Gygax::

I know this letter comes a bit too late.  We have conversed in the past via email, but unfortunately our paths never crossed and I was never able to say these words in person.  First of all I want to wish you happy birthday.  It is a day that should be celebrated by all the people you brought happiness to (if they know it or not), and a few fingers of single malt will be had by me in your honor.

I think sometimes of who or what I would have become if D&D was not a major influence in my life.  While my teenage friends were out getting into mischief, I was fighting Orcs.  When others were cutting class and not wanting to get an education, I became fascinated with history, geography, and writing thanks to the game you brought into the world.  I am not saying D&D made me the man I am today, but it did shape who I became.  I have had the pleasure of meeting a number of your friends and though stories I got a feel for the person you were.  Hearing Frank Mentzer talk about you in a “Remembering Gary” panel a few years back and listening to Tim Kask talk about the old days at TSR was a great experience and makes me wish I could have had the chance to chat with you.

Alas it is a bit too late, but every time I read my Dungeon Masters Guide, or pick up an old issue of Dragon I can hear the words of inspiration again and again.  So happy Birthday Gary, perhaps someday when all is done here on this material plane, I can have a seat at your table in the afterlife and play Keep on the Borderlands one more time.

Thank you for everything….
